The Numismatic Collection of the Military History Museum incorporates nearly 40,000 pieces of insignia, decorations, historical commemorative medals as well as badges. Furthermore, it contains Notgeld, and small quantities of coins and banknotes. The First World War Austro-Hungarian unit and propaganda badge collection, the Napoleonic commemorative medals and the medals and decorations collection of the War of Independence in 1848-1849 are outstanding both at national and international levels. Although the Museum collects primarily Hungarian and Hungarian-related artefacts, the collection also includes numerous articles from around the world.
The personal estates contain the orders and decorations of many eminent Hungarian military personnel including Arthur Arz, Archduke Joseph, Károly Kratochvil or Géza Lakatos, among other relics of military personnel of the 20th century. Military leaders’ decorations of this era and the decorations and medals of “ordinary” soldiers have been equally treasured in our collection.
